💰 Grants, Fellowships & Research Funding

External funding is the lifeblood of academic research. For PhD students, competitive fellowships enhance your stipend, boost your CV, and — crucially — signal to future employers that external experts validated your research potential.

1. PhD Fellowships (United States)

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP)

The most prestigious US PhD fellowship for STEM students.

Attribute Details
Amount $37,000/year stipend + $16,000/year tuition allowance for 3 years
Eligibility US citizens/permanent residents; apply in years 1–2 of PhD or in final year of undergrad
Selection rate ~15–20% of applicants
Deadline Mid-October annually

Application components:

  • Personal Statement (3 pages)
  • Research Statement (2 pages)
  • 3 reference letters

[!TIP] The NSF GRFP evaluates on two criteria: Intellectual Merit (scientific contribution) and Broader Impacts (societal benefit). Your statements must explicitly address both. Many strong applications fail by treating Broader Impacts as an afterthought.

Resources:

NDSEG Fellowship (National Defense Science and Engineering)

Department of Defense fellowship with emphasis on defense-relevant research.

Attribute Details
Amount ~$38,400/year stipend for 3 years
Eligibility US citizens applying to or in early PhD
Areas CS, EE, materials, mathematics, physics, chemistry
Deadline December annually

DOE CSGF (Department of Energy Computational Science)

Prestigious fellowship focused on HPC and computational science.

Attribute Details
Amount $45,000/year + tuition + $1,000 academic allowance for up to 4 years
Requirement 12-week practicum at a DOE national laboratory
Deadline January annually

Other US Fellowships

Fellowship Funder Focus Amount
Hertz Fellowship Hertz Foundation Applied science, engineering $38,000/year
FORD Foundation Ford Foundation Diversity in academia $27,000/year
GEM Fellowship GEM Consortium URMs in engineering/science Stipend + tuition
SMART Scholarship DoD Defense-focused STEM Full funding + employment

2. International Fellowships

Fellowship Region Amount Notes
Fulbright US → International Variable Research or study abroad
Marie Skłodowska-Curie EU ~€2,500–3,000/month Mobility-focused; for postdocs and PhDs
DAAD Germany Full funding Study/research in Germany
Commonwealth Scholarship Commonwealth Full funding Study in UK
Canada Graduate Scholarships Canada CAD $35,000/year NSERC CGS-D

3. Internal University Funding

Before pursuing external grants, exhaust internal sources — they have higher acceptance rates:

  • Department travel grants — For conference attendance
  • Graduate school fellowship competitions — Often overlooked
  • Center/institute seed grants — Cross-department research centers often have small grants
  • Gift funds — Industry-donated funds administered by advisors
  • Teaching assistant (TA) supplement — Some TA positions include additional research funding

Ask your department’s graduate coordinator or financial administrator what is available.

4. Research Grants (for Faculty and Advanced PhD Students)

NSF Programs Relevant to CS

Program CS Relevance Amount
SHF (Software and Hardware Foundations) Systems, PL, architecture $400K–$800K
IIS (Information and Intelligent Systems) AI, HCI, databases $400K–$800K
CNS (Computer and Network Systems) Networking, security, distributed systems $400K–$800K
CAREER Award Early-career faculty $500K–$600K over 5 years
CISE Research Initiation Initiative Junior faculty startup grants $50K

DARPA and ARPA-E

Government funding for higher-risk, higher-reward research:

  • DARPA I2O — Information Innovation Office; AI, cyber, networking
  • DARPA MTO — Microsystems; hardware, embedded AI
  • DARPA funding is highly competitive and often requires government connections. Watch for BAAs (Broad Agency Announcements).

5. Conference Travel Funding

Don’t pay for conference travel out of pocket. Multiple sources exist:

Student Travel Grants

Most major CS conferences offer student travel grants:

  • NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR — ~$500–2,000 for accepted paper authors
  • ACM Conferences (SIGCOMM, SOSP, etc.) — SIGCOMM Student Research Competition grants
  • IEEE Conferences — IEEE Young Professional travel awards

Professional Society Grants

6. Grant Writing Tips

Grant writing is a learnable skill, and it compounds over a career:

Core Principles

  1. Lead with the problem, not the solution — Reviewers must be convinced the problem matters before they care about your approach.
  2. Be explicit about novelty — State clearly what has not been done before, and why existing approaches fail.
  3. Make evaluation criteria concrete — How will you know if the project succeeded?
  4. Broader impacts require genuine thought — How does this change the world outside your lab?

Resources for Grant Writing

  • NSF Grant Proposal Guide — Official guide (read the whole thing)
  • Grant Forward — Database of funding opportunities across agencies
  • PIVOT (ProQuest) — Comprehensive funding database (institutional access)
  • Your university’s Office of Sponsored Research — They have grant writers and pre-submission review
