Publishing Guide

Navigate the scholarly publishing landscape efficiently and increase the impact of your work.

1. Choosing the Right Venue

  • Scope match – read the journal’s aims & scope; ensure your contribution fits.
  • Impact metrics – consider Impact Factor, h‑index, and community reputation.
  • Open‑access policy – gold OA (author pays), green OA (self‑archive), or hybrid.
  • Speed – typical review time (look for median days on journal website).
  • Conference vs. Journal – CS often values top conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, PLDI) for fast dissemination.

2. Pre‑print and Early Dissemination

  • Upload to arXiv, arXiv‑CS, bioRxiv (for interdisciplinary work) before submission.
  • Include a clear statement in the manuscript: “This work was posted on arXiv (arXiv:xxxx.xxxxx) on DATE.”
  • Verify the venue’s policy on pre‑prints (most CS conferences allow it).

3. Manuscript Preparation Checklist

| Item | Details | |—|—| | Template | Use the official LaTeX/Word template provided by the venue. | | Length | Respect page limits (including references). | | Figures | High‑resolution (300 dpi), readable fonts, captions with concise description. | | Code & Data | Provide a URL (GitHub, Zenodo) and a DOI in the Data Availability section. | | Ethics Statement | Include if required (e.g., for ML with human data). | | Supplementary Material | Upload additional experiments or proofs as separate PDF/ZIP. |

4. Open‑Access Options

  • Gold OA: Pay‑to‑publish (Springer Open, IEEE Access). Check for institutional discounts.
  • Green OA: Self‑archive the accepted manuscript in your institutional repository after the embargo period.
  • Diamond OA: No APC, often community‑run journals (e.g., JMLR). Great for CS.

5. Post‑Publication Promotion

  • Share the DOI on Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and relevant Discord channels.
  • Add the paper to Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and ResearchGate profiles.
  • Deposit code and datasets with a permanent DOI (Zenodo integration with GitHub).

6. Checklist

  • Identify 3–5 suitable venues and compare metrics.
  • Prepare a pre‑print and upload to arXiv.
  • Draft manuscript using the official template.
  • Ensure ethical statements and reproducibility statements are included.
  • Select open‑access route and plan APC funding if needed.
  • Submit and track the manuscript via the journal’s portal.
  • After acceptance, update repository with DOI and share broadly.
